A brief history.....
The High Water Marks
The High Water Marks formed in 2003 by Hilarie Sidney (longtime drummer/song writer for the Apples in Stereo and one of the co-founders of the Elephant 6 label) and Per Ole Bratset (Guitarist/song writer for Palermo). The project blossomed when Hilarie first met Per in Oslo while she was on tour with the Apples in Stereo. Keeping in touch, the two wrote songs together sending the tracks over-seas via the mail and, when the project proved to be promising, Hilarie flew back to Oslo after a few months to finish the recordings at the Gyldenløve Hotel Majorstuen, room 528. These recordings became the band’s first release, “Songs About the Ocean,” mixed by Robert Schneider at Pet Sounds Studio, and released by Eenie Meenie Records (US) and Racing Junior (Scandinavia) in 2004.
In the hopes to tour and support the record, they recruited Jim Lindsay, (longtime drummer for Oranger, Preston School of Industry, and the Flipsides), and local Lexington bassist Mike Snowden. The band soon toured and played with other bands including the Apples in Stereo, Clinic, Sons and Daughters, Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah, Vampire Weekend and have toured the US and Europe (although were denied entry into the UK and never got to play there!) in support of the record. Upon return the band began to work on the second record, a full band effort this time, including Jim and Mike, with Jim contributing to production and engineering as well as the song, Poison Remedy. The resulting “Polar” was released in 2007 on Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records. Mike has since left the band, and is replaced by Kenny Johnson. The High Water Marks are now working on their 3rd record due to be released in the summer of 2011 on the bands own new label, The People’s King Recording Company.
